Fly of the Week: the Partridge and Orange

On the North American Fly Fishing Forum, there is a "tie-a-long" where one of the members is posting a fly, and it's recipe, and whomever signs up for it will post pics of how they tied their fly. Pretty heat idea, I though, as I signed up.

And then I thought, why not just showcase these flies as the Fly of the Week. The first few patterns are a little simplistic, but in the next few weeks the complexity is going to get ratcheted up.

So here is the first fly, the venerable Partridge and Orange.

Partridge and Orange
Hook: this is a 14, but I prefer them a little smaller, say 16-20. I tied it larger for the picture.
Thread: 6/0 orange thread
Thorax: Maroon synthetic dubbing.
Hackle: Olive colored partridge soft hackle.

  2. Thanks Dustin! This is probably one of my favorite soft hackles for just those reasons (plus they seem to catch a fish or two.)

  3. Oh, I just love soft hackles...they look so realistic! I'm thinking that this one could entice a nice brown trout!

  4. RD, I think that this one could... ;) This is one of my favorite flies, both to tie and fish. You can take 5 minutes to tie up a bunch and then the rest of the day losing them in the bushes(well, at least I do.) lol
