Happy Memorial Day

While we're all chowing down on burgers and dogs today, let's take a moment to remember what this holiday is about, honoring out servicemen and women. We had this conversation at work yesterday on the meaning of different holidays (Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc) because some of the young-uns didn't know. Apparently these aren't the things that are taught in schools much now.

A few of us tried to explain that it's to honor those that sacrifice for our everyday freedoms. The service members that died in the Middle East over the past decade. Those in Korea and Viet Nam have disappeared with a trace. And, long a go, those that fought and died to create this nation in the first place.

My uncle service in the Marines and my great-grandfather was in the navy during WWII. My ex-es brother is currently in the Marines and I have a few buddies from high school that are currently serving as well. Thank you.

Feel free to thank anyone you know serving in the comments below. Stay safe today.

  1. Yes, let's not forget why we are off today and able to drink beers and bar-b-que.

  3. Hi Anthony...you are right about many of the younger kids not knowing about these holidays.

My kids were taught at a very young age the importance of honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country, those who serve in the armed forces in the past and present and the families who support them.

I hope you had a safe Memorial Day.

  4. Hi Ed, I was honestly shocked at the lack of knowledge that these kids had for the holidays. The only one who had an idea was one that was homeschooled. He's a sharp one so it doesn't surprise me.

I hope you have a safe holiday as well.
