Since it appears that iMovie needs more than 40 minutes to upload a 5 minute video to Youtube and work seems to think that I should show up on time, this is a bit later than I wanted to post this. But rather late than never, I guess.
I had found a streamer quite some time ago, and after re-finding it in my fishing vest, I sat down with it to play with the design. This streamer was little more than a hook with a wad of silver tinsel attached to it. After some thinking and a couple spins, I came up with the Electric Minnow.
the Electric Minnow Hook: Size 8 nymph hook Body: Gold Tinsel Hackle: guinea hackle, attached via the pull-through method Wing: holographic lite-bright.
Until next week... and I promise that fly with have 0% guinea hackle in it. Even I think it's getting ridiculous.
Finally, I have it. As good as it's gonna get any time soon, anyway. The Black Ghost is one of those streamer patterns that I've always loved but a) had no idea how to tie and b) didn't know where to start.
This weeks Fly of the Week comes from the Northwestern part of the US of A; the Picket Pin. This is the fourth installment of the NAFFF tie-a-long and so far is the first that I had never tied before. I had did a quick Google Image search before the step by step was posted, and my reaction was a bit along the lines of "WTF..." But Mr. Pocono's great instructions made this fly almost as easy to tie as a Woolly Bugger. (Click the prior link and scroll down until you find it.)
In following along with the NAFFF Fly Tie-a-long, this weeks fly is the Woolly Bugger. This venerable fly is most frequently the first fly anyone ties, except maybe the San Juan Worm. This fly is either weighted or weightless, bead head, cone head, no head; in as many colors as the rainbow.
We're back online and ready to go! Due to the monster storm that hit, well, most of the country, we were without power on Wednesday and then yesterday I spent all day trying to bend jQuery programs to my will, with mixed success. So by the time I got home the last thing I wanted to stare at was another computer screen.
So the fly of the week is a little late; I apologize. But I hope that the wait was worth it.
It's that time of year...... the weather is cold and most anglers are stuck inside. If your like me, this means a lot more time at the vice, tying flies while dreaming to the fish that the will catch.
Yeah, I know. I missed last week. Sorry guys! Between projects for work (I'm a freelance web designer) and projects for my classes (God bless higher education) I didn't have time to look at the vice, let alone sat at it.
So to make up for it, I'll give ya a double header (and early); 2 flies for the price of one! Ready? Here we go....
The Muddler Minnow is a great little general pattern that every fly fisher should have in their arsenal. While it can be a pain to tie (dang stacked deer hair!!) once you get it down, your good to go on a lot of other patterns that require that dreaded deer hair.
It's a dreary, rainy day so I thought that I would catch up on tying some flys. I noticed that I was low on one of my favorite streamers, a pattern I created and called Ant's Special Streamer(very original name, I know.) I've had luck with this one on panfish and bass, and some limited success on trout. I'm going to pit it against some steelhead at the end of next month; we'll see how that turns out.
