I was able to get out yesterday for a few hours and had a chance to try some of those hand-tied knotted leaders that I whipped up a bit ago. I won't go into the details of my exploits, but I learned a few things. Namely:
1: a 15 foot leader does not cast well with only 8 feet of actual line out.
2: My habit of leaving tag ends on knots can be problematic. Such as taking 5-10 minutes to untie a leader on every 3rd cast that has inexplicably tied itself to itself.
3: You can get so frustrated that you cut the damn leader in half, tie on 3 feet of tippet and have some success.
4:When approaching the bank of the stream, just because the snow goes to the very edge does not mean that there is ground beneath it.
5: A header into a snow bank is only arguably better than a header into a stream.

Builder a Leader Workshop Part 2: It's Knot as hard as you think
Putting bad puns aside for the moment, this second part of my impromptu leader-building series is about knotted leaders. Now, when I first started fly fishing, I read somewhere (y'know, that place were all good information is obtained) that knottless tapered leaders were better than knotted leaders as they didn't snag as much, and maybe some other arguments that I didn't really understand but since the writer sounded like he did I took him at his word. I bought my knotless leaders like a good boy and didn't think much about it.

Been Good This Year.
Apparently I've been good this year, as Santa s given me a bit of cash (and gift cards) for some new toys. And after a bit of deliberating, I think that I will get a new tying vice, a float tube, and as I'm getting more into making my own leaders, some leader material.
I'm going to co up to Cabela's (God bless coupons) and take a look-see at what they have.
Can anyone make any suggestions?

Build-A-Leader Workshop
Ever since I started fly fishing, I've been using tapered knot-less leaders. They're pretty cheap and abundantly available. But soon I started to hear about furled leaders and started to wonder....
So the next time I was in a fly shop, I took a look around. And didn't see one. As in the next shop and the one after that.
